My name is Kyle, I grew up in the suburbs of New York as the youngest of the millenial generation. As a kid I always wanted to be a scientist, but somehow I convinced myself that that wasn't a real job because if it was then everyone would want to do it, so instead I decided I wanted to be a doctor. After a semester at university I ended up buying into the tech hype and studying computer science and economics (with a brief stint studying Latin) in Washington D.C., working there a few years until the Covid pandemic. After a year back in New York I ended up dropping the job and everything else and moving across the Atlantic to Copenhagen (where I had also done a semester abroad) for a job writing code for the wine tech company Vivino (thematically a total 180° from my previous job). Loved the people there, loved the startup culture, but never really enjoyed just writing code for a living.
At some point during my time in Copenhagen, perhaps as a sort of quarter-life crisis, I had the realisation that kid Kyle was right: I should be a scientist. So for the second time in just over 5 years, I dropped everything and started fresh. This time brought me to Amsterdam, where I'm currently doing a master's program in Computational Science at the University of Amsterdam (jointly with Vrije University).
Having more free time and being in an academic environment very quickly reminded me how much I love learning and science, and my childish sense natural curiosity and desire to learn has inspired me to start a whole bunch of side projects, writing projects, and even just to sit and ponder things at length. Do you ever ponder? You should, it's awesome.
Anyway, I decided to make this site as a central repository of all my scientific and creative work, general thoughts, etc: basically a place to say anything that I feel like saying in whatever format I feel like. I'm honestly tired of other "services" using my work and ideas as a way to get people to stick around long enough to see an advertisement. I thought about making a substack for a while but eventually landed on this instead.
This site is built on the principles I miss from the Internet of the my childhood: it is free, without advertisements, without tracking or analytics (I have no idea how many people visit, if any), and open to everyone. It's here because I have things I want to say, and this is the place I'm going to say them. I'm not using any frameworks or fancy javascript or anything, this is just a static website made of raw html files that I type with my own 10 meat fingers into a text editor.
Take a look around, I hope you like what you find. If you do then feel free to reach out, I'm pretty friendly and love to chat about this stuff.
